While focusing on safety and practicality, this day-long course with both classroom training and live fire-hands-on exercises and demos is one of only two nationally recognized fireworks display operator training programs. The Pyrotechnic Guild training offers eight-hours of basic training and teaches lead operators how to safely comply with the requirements of applicable NFPA codes. Fireworks equipment and materials are reviewed. The permitting process and display site selection is addressed. Mishaps and malfunctions are discussed and demonstrated. Upon completion of the course, the attendee will receive a certificate of attendance documenting eight hours of training and continuing education. Successful completion of the course and passing the exam after the course makes one eligible for certification as a display operator by the PGI and requires additional display crew experience. Over 3,000 students have been trained using this course. All attendees receive a copy of the 300-page textbook which serves as a valuable reference. This course is useful to both novice and experienced display operators.

The lead instructor and principle author of the course textbook, Dr. John Steinberg, has been a licensed lead display operator for 25 years. He has been a co-author of NFPA codes 1123, 1124, 1125, 1126, 1127, and 160 for over 20 years, serving on the NFPA Technical Committees on Pyrotechnics and on Special Effects. He has written state licensing exams and has been teaching display operators for decades.

*There is a minimum participation requirement of six (6) students for this course to be held.
